What are upper lip lines?

Lip lines are small creases that occur above and below our lips – although much more commonly on the upper lip. They typically get more pronounced as we age.

What causes upper lip lines?

Upper lip lines are another part of the ageing process. The muscles around our lips expand and contract as we eat, talk, frown – and smile! As we get older, our skin loses its elasticity and ability to produce as much collagen, and so it’s unable to heal and renew itself as well as it did when we were younger.

What treatments are available?

There are a number of treatments available to improve the appearance of upper lip lines but on a ideally world we should try to prevent them from happening in the first place.

Upper lip lines are one of the most difficult areas to treat and to look natural. One method is to inject dermal filler directly into the lip lines, or into the lip. This will give immediate reduction in the appearance of lip lines, but will be subtle enough that the treatment still looks natural.

Alternatively, for those who don’t want dermal fillers, Polynucleotides,  microneedling can also offer a reduction in the appearance of lip lines. None of these treatments will give immediate results, but it will stimulate your skin’s natural ability to heal itself and produce collagen, reducing lip lines over time.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid-based fillers and have one of the best safety profiles of any injectable treatment, due to their biodegradable nature. They are minimally invasive and safe, if done by an experienced medical professional. As with any procedure, there are possible risks, the most common being post-procedure redness, bruising and swelling. All risks will be discussed on your consultation.

Do dermal fillers hurt?

I do everything I can to reduce discomfort and make the treatment as pleasant as possible. A topical local anaesthetic can be used in the area to be treated before the procedure, and any needles used during the treatment are very small in size. My experience and approach to patient care makes all procedures I do comfortable and safe.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Dermal fillers can last anywhere between three to 18 months. This will depend on the type of filler injected, the amount of filler used, the area of the face being treated and how active it is. It is also affected by how quickly your body naturally breaks down the filler, which will vary from person to person. During our consultation, we can discuss this in detail, taking into consideration your specific needs.

Do dermal fillers have any side effects?

Dermal fillers are minimally invasive and most people can return to their normal life immediately after treatment. However, all treatments pose some risk; the common side effects are redness, swelling and bruising. Allergic reactions are very rare but can occur. If you suffer from cold sores, it’s advisable to do preventive medication before treatment.

During your treatment journey with me, I will listen to your concerns and then use my experience and medical knowledge to create a treatment plan that will suit you specifically.
