Demystifying Dermal Fillers: Separating Fact from Fiction

Lift sagging skin and contour facial features with Dr Raquel’s skilled dermal filler treatments

Have you ever looked in the mirror and pushed up your skin to achieve a more youthful look? Thought to yourself, if I could just pin my cheeks and jawline here, I’d be happy with my appearance?

This is not uncommon as we age. Many assume that the only way to achieve this look is through surgery –we’re glad to confirm that you’re wrong!

Just a few injections of dermal fillers can make all the difference to your ageing face. The quick and relatively painless procedure costs significantly less than surgery and ensures you avoid any downtime – enabling you to get back to work and your usual activities after just a few hours.

Achieving natural results with fillers

You may have only heard of dermal fillers when they go wrong. Overinflated lips and puffed-up cheeks have unfortunately given them a bad rep, but we can confirm that when tailored to your individual needs by a highly trained and experienced medical professional such as Dr Raquel, dermal fillers can transform your face in the most natural-looking and subtle way possible.

Dermal fillers can be used to:

  • Lift sagging cheeks
  • Enhance the shape of your lips
  • Reduce the appearance of jowls
  • Add definition to your chin and jawline
  • Address sunken under the eyes (tear troughs-dark circles)
  • Fill hollows in your temples (the areas on the side of your head between your eyes and hairline)
  • Reduce the appearance of lines around the mouth (also known as smoker’s lines around your mouth), nasolabial lines (lines between the nose and corners of the mouth), and marionette lines (also known as puppet lines appearing from the corner of the mouth downwards)

Selecting the best dermal fillers for you

There are a number of types of dermal fillers available, which contain different ingredients and work in slightly different ways. Dr Raquel is highly experienced in offering the most popular options:

  • Hyaluronic acid fillers (last three to 12 months):designed to replace volume and rehydrate the skin.
  • Hybrid hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite fillers (last 12-24 months):replace volume and hydration, while also stimulating collagen production for firmer more flexible skin.
  • Biostimulators (last 12-19 months):stimulate collagen production for firmer more flexible skin without adding volume.

The dermal filler we recommend will depend entirely on your individual circumstances. Dr Raquel will carefully assess your concerns and outline what approach will work best, while taking into account the level of difference you want to see, upcoming events you may have, and the budget you have in mind.

We ensure that your dermal filler treatment not only makes you look your best, but makes you feel your best too!

The risks of dermal filler treatment

Non-surgical rejuvenation with dermal fillers is low risk compared to undergoing a surgical facelift. We use local anaesthetic to numb the area prior to injection, so pain is kept to a minimum and you are awake throughout the procedure.

Like with any injections, swelling, itching and redness are normal after a dermal filler treatment and generally calm down after a few hours, while bruising can occur.

Allergic reactions are very rare but can happen. The most serious risk is vascular occlusion – when a blood vessel gets blocked – which can lead to tissue death and, in extreme but again very rare circumstances, blindness.

Thankfully, Dr Raquel is thoroughly trained in how to prevent and manage complications should they take place. In clinic, we have essential medicine and equipment to use in case anything goes not to plan.

Booking a dermal filler appointment

Dermal fillers are suitable for most people, unless you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a particular medical condition. If you suffer from cold sores, we’ll recommend preventative medication before treatment.

Dermal fillers aren’t just for women – men can also hugely benefit from treatment, and Dr Raquel is skilled at tailoring your procedure to suit your different facial anatomy and individual needs.

Before any treatment takes place, you will be invited to an in-depth consultation with Dr Raquel and given time to consider your options before going ahead. Prices start from £325.

Learn how this innovative treatment can reduce skin sagging and leave you with a glowing complexion

Profhilo® is one of the most in-demand aesthetic treatments across the world. Using ultra-pure hyaluronic acid, it can brighten and tighten skin in two treatments.

Suitable for all skin types, Profhilo® is a must-have if you want to boost your skin’s quality and prevent ageing concerns from worsening.

Profhilo® in action

Getting older means our ability to produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid begins to decline. Inevitably, this leads to lines, folds, wrinkles and dull-looking skin.

Profhilo® contains ultra-pure hyaluronic acid gel which, when injected just below the skin’s surface, stimulates cells to produce more collagen and elastin while adding much-needed hydration. This leads to firmer, brighter skin that will leave you looking fresh and feeling confident, without changing any of your features.

The treatment can be used on the face, neck and décolletage, as well as the abdomen, knees and inner arms. 10 small injections of Profhilo® will be required to ensure that it spreads evenly across the entire treatment area. Don’t worry about pain – we’ll use numbing cream to ensure discomfort is kept to a minimum.

Following the procedure, the treated area will be slightly red and swollen, and you may have some bruising, which will calm down within a couple of days. It’s best to avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours as it could get into the injection points and cause an infection.

You’ll need two sessions at separate appointments, spaced four months apart. This is to ensure that you get the best results possible.

Profhilo® results

Profhilo® is a non-invasive, long-lasting treatment that will reduce your skin’s laxity – all too common as we age – giving back its youthful bounce. You can also expect to get your glow back, as the hyaluronic acid used in Profhilo® adds hydration to brighten and rejuvenate dull skin. Overall, you’ll notice a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, as well as an improvement in skin’s tone and texture.

Like all other aesthetic treatments, Profhilo® doesn’t offer a permanent solution as your face will continue to age, but having regular treatments every three months can slow the signs of ageing and help maintain skin quality.

Of course this does require continued investment, but it is definitely worth it if you want to see a noticeable difference in your skin. At Dr Raquel Skin & Medical Cosmetics, Profhilo® treatments start from £325.

The difference between Profhilo®, fillers and skinboosters

Hyaluronic acid is also the key ingredient in some types of dermal fillers and skinboosters, so it’s easy to get mixed up between the three.

The important thing to understand is that there are various types of hyaluronic acid that can be used in different ways. The hyaluronic acid used in fillers is designed to add volume and contour the face and body, which Profhilo® doesn’t do. Skinboosters are great at adding hydration, stimulate collagen but they don’t have the same bio remodelling effect to tighten and improve the skin tissue like Profhilo® does.

A consultation with Dr Raquel will determine what option is best for you. Often, she will recommend combining other treatments with Profhilo® treatments to really boost results.

What is Microneedling? Discover how a SkinPen treatment can help you

Microneedling is often referred to as collagen induction therapy and is a fantastic option for boosting your skin quality and addressing the signs of ageing.

It can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, fade hyperpigmentation, minimise the appearance of scars, and improve skin tone and texture.

Microneedling is also a fantastic option if you’re suffering from hair loss.

Creating injury to see results

It may sound scary, but it’s really not! Microneedling works by using small needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. This then triggers the body to renew cells to heal these wounds. As a result, you’ll see brighter, healthier looking skin with no lasting damage. Microneedling works in the same way when it penetrates the scalp. This time it rejuvenates hair follicles, leading to thicker and stronger hair growth.

We can also add special solutions to the skin and scalp that boost results even further. These contain things like exosomes and growth factors, which regenerate cells to enhance your skin and hair’s quality.

Numbing cream is used to ensure the treatment is not painful.

Award-winning technology

There are lots of microneedling devices available, but here at Dr Raquel Skin & Cosmetics we use the SkinPen. As an FDA-cleared device, we trust that it’s safe and efficient when used in the right hands.

Thanks to its disposable cartridges, there’s no risk of cross contamination between patients, while clinical studies have found that 94% of patients noticed improvement in their fine lines and wrinkles just one month after treatment.

Radiant skin and healthy-looking hair worth showing off

Depending on the extend of your skin concerns, we’ll recommend between three to six treatments for the best results. Once you’ve completed your course, your skin will be glowing in a good way! Fine lines and wrinkles will be reduced, while acne scarring and hyperpigmentation will have faded.

Two or three microneedling cycles a year will prevent skin concerns from worsening, while keeping it looking fresh and feeling good.

Overall, microneedling is a fantastic treatment if you want to improve your skin health and feel confident going make-up free! It’s also great in combination with other treatments such as dermal fillers.

For hair loss, three to six treatments are again recommended. We’ll also put a maintenance plan in place to avoid further hair loss.
